Like most of the parts on your bike, spoke choice boils down to the look, strength and weight you want. Your wheels are one of the more critical areas of your bike where you can truly reduce weight. Rotational weight is the weight of your wheels times 3 which means if your wheels weigh 3lbs for the set, then they actually weigh 9lbs when you are racing due to the rotational weight factor. This is why it is critical to have the best strength to weight ratio on your wheels you can get!
In the past, the best way to achieve this was with Titanium spokes. Today, we use 15 gauge stainless steel spokes and aluminum nipples on all our Mini and Expert wheels to keep the weight down without sacrificing any strength as the weight of 15 gauge spokes is nearly equal to the weight of Ti spokes. This keeps the weight down as well as your cost. However, we do use 14 gauge stainless spokes on all our Pro model wheels as the stress these wheels take is much more than the other wheel sizes.
All stainless spokes are sold in packs of 18 as are the nipples.
